Do you have to have your morning cup of coffee or tea to get started every day? Some non-coffee drinkers actually wake up and start their days with soft drinks. We, as a nation, have become addicted to caffeine. Many individuals who must stay awake for long hours, such as physicians or nurses, rely on coffee to help them get through these many hours. Today, many people consume the new energy drinks which have even more caffeine in them than a normal soft drink or cup of coffee. 90% of adults consume caffeine daily in North America.
Bad Caffeine Addiction Effects
Caffeine is a nervous system stimulant drug. It can make you feel more alert and give you a boost of energy. Caffeine acts as a diuretic which causes you to lose calcium. If you have a high caffeine intake, you might want to take calcium supplements. Too much caffeine can have bad side effects. Some of these are:
• Rapid Breathing
• Heart Palpitations
Caffeine Addiction Withdrawal Symptoms
Over time, you will build up a tolerance for caffeine just as you would any other drug or alcohol. You will develop physical cravings for the substance. If you do not have some caffeine, you will have withdrawal symptoms. These can include:
• Lack of Concentration
• Stiffness and Muscle Pain
Usually the withdrawal symptoms will last from a few days to a week. More severe addictions may take up to two weeks to have detoxification completely accomplished. Once you have the caffeine completely out of your system, chances are you will feel more alert and energetic. You won’t be experiencing the highs and lows of caffeine addiction.
It is better to try to wean yourself off of caffeine instead of going cold-turkey in order to avoid some of the uncomfortable withdrawal symptoms you will experience otherwise.
